(mylbsonline.com/Liberia/Oct.16/2013) Great Britain has reopened its embassy in Monrovia after 22 years of closure.

The British embassy was closed in early 1990 due to the Liberian civil conflict. The embassy’s reopening ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in Sinkor, suburb of Monrovia.

Speaking at the ceremony, British Minister for Africa and Common-wealth Affairs, Mark Simmonds, said: “Liberia is a country of choice for British investment.”

“Liberia is a close friend of Great Britain and the reopening of the British Embassy near Monrovia is a demonstration of the close ties subsisting between the two countries,” Minister Simmonds also said.

He promised that the United Kingdom (UK) will explore other ways of improving the UK’s Visa service for Liberians.

The British Minister, however, called on the Liberian government to remove tariffs and barriers to trade and improve on infrastructure in the country, given the country’s crucial role in the region.

He also wants the Liberian government implement an “open and fair” business environment which he considered important to Liberia’s impressive growth.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister, Augustine Ngafuan, traced the cordial ties existing between Liberia and the UK as far back as to Liberia’s independence, when Great Britain was the first nation to recognize the West African nation’s independence.

“The two countries are very close and the 22 years of absence of the British Embassy in Monrovia created gap between Liberia and UK,” further noted.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ngafuan has termed the reopening of the British Embassy near the Liberian Capitol and the resumption of British Airways flight to the country as an expression of confidence in the administration of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and the economic environment in Liberia.
