(  Today (Thursday, October 24), 2013, is United Nations (UN) Day and is being celebrated across Liberia as a working holiday.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, in a proclamation issued Wednesday in Monrovia, recounted the UN’s invaluable contributions to global peace and security since its formation in 1945.

A Foreign Ministry release recalled: “The UN General Assembly, on October 13, 1957, adopted a resolution, declaring October 24 of every year the anniversary of the coming into being of the UN Charter.”

The President noted: “Liberia, as one of the founding members and signatories of the UN charter, has accrued meaningful benefits from the UN.”

She said: “Liberia will continue supporting all programs of the world body.”

According to the release, the celebrations commenced with a parade from the Palm Spring Resort Hotel in Congo Town.

The parade continued to the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, where an indoor program was held under the theme, “UN for You.”

The Liberian Leader also noted in the proclamation: “The UN Organization and its member states have continuously played a critical role in the rebuilding of Liberia.”

Liberia’s rebuilding process follows the country’s 15-year civil crisis for which “it remains grateful.”
