MONROVIA, LIBERIA (John Kumeh, President George Weah has announced the All Liberian Conference to address critical constitutional issues in Liberia.
Delivering his State of the Nation Address Monday, January 27, 2020, the Liberian Leader said the conference will focus on three propositions.
President Weah named Dual Citizenship, the Reduction of Presidential and Legislative Tenures and the holding of elections in November.
He also said that the conference will pave the way for the holding of a National Referendum to enable Liberians vote for or against the three propositions.
The Liberian Leader noted that during 2019, fifty-two pieces of laws were sent to the National Legislature for consideration.
The President has, meanwhile, urged members of the National Legislature to pass bills pending before that august body.
Meanwhile, the Liberian Chief Executive emphasized that former and current officials of Government linked to corruption will not go with impunity.
The Weah-led Government has vowed to leave no stone unturned in the fight against corruption.
President Weah said:” Government officials who see corruption as a way of life will face the full weight of the law.”
The Liberian Leader, however, decried the negative impact of corruption on the Country, but reassured Liberians of Government’s resolve to deal with corruption cases without fear or favor.
He said this is experienced by the dismissal, arrest and subsequent prosecution of a former Managing Director and other Government officials accused of corruption to vindicate themselves from corruption charges.
For the moment, President Weah has disclosed that Government has hired the services of an International Assets Recovery Firm to assist Government recover the Country’s stolen wealth decades ago.
In another development, President Weah has spoken of the completion of major roads infrastructure in the Country, mainly in Southeastern Liberia.
He said his Government has also negotiated funding from bilateral and multilateral institutions, including the African Development Bank and EU Bank among others, to begin the construction of major roads targeted under the Government’s road agenda.
He named roads that have been completed and earmarked for administration as the Kanweaken-Fish Town Road, Ganta-Tappita Highway, Grand Kru-Sinoe County Road, and Gbarnga-Salayea Highway among others.
President Weah told the Joint Chambers of the National Legislature that about 200 km of community roads financed through domestic revenue will be completed in time.
The Liberian Leader also disclosed plans by the Government to complete the modernization of the Monrovia-Robertsfield Highway by March this year.
Speaking further, Liberia’s Chief Executive George Weah has outlined several measures to stimulate economic growth and attract needed investments to Liberia.
President Weah assured that Government will work with determination; vigor and focus to establish a stabilized micro-economy reduce inflation and put Liberians to work in the agriculture and other key sectors.
The President disclosed that the Judiciary would play a significant role in reforming the business sector to attract investors’ interest.
The Liberian Leader also spoke of steps to control Government’s spending and improve governance as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
President Weah also stressed that Liberia’s financial system remains sound and stable, despite the economic challenges confronting the Nation.
On agriculture, the Government of Liberia says Agriculture remains a cardinal part of the growth and development of Liberia.
According to President Weah, investing in the sector will guarantee food security and provide jobs for thousands of Liberian in improving their livelihood.
He called on the Liberian Senate to ensure the confirmation of the Agriculture Minister designate, as she has the vision for Agriculture transformation and improve economic growth in Liberia.
The Liberian Chief Executive said government intends to announce local and international support resources to meet the agriculture drive that will focus on the value chain from the farm land to market places across the Country.
Meanwhile, the Liberian Leader said:” The Government of Liberia is collaborating with international partners in making the Coffee and Cocoa viable and profitable.”
