Monrovia Liberia – President George Weah has requested a “Joint Resolution by the Legislature” to extend the conduct of the National Census to March 2021.
In a communication to the House of Representatives Tuesday, President Weah referenced a proclamation from Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on December 21, 2016, declaring the holding of a National Housing and Population Census on March 21, 2018.
According to President Weah, financial constraints then impeded the holding of the census, thereby necessitating a joint resolution for the conduct of the census on December 8, 2019 but similar issues has also undermined it.
The Liberian Leader said Liberia has gone beyond a ten- year bench mark for the holding of census, a pre -requisite to evaluating and determining the socio-economic needs of the population.
The President said, government attaches importance to conducting the census as the expected from the census will inform the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the country’s development programs.
Meanwhile, the instrument has been forwarded to the House Committee on Internal Affairs, Good Governance, and Ways and Means to report in one week.
