First Lady Clar Marie Weah has intensified her engagements with Liberian women from all walks of life.
Following a series of healthy discussions with hundreds of fish sellers in the Popo-beach Community and the wives of AFL Soldiers among others over the past days, Mrs. Weah, Thursday, visited the Transport Ministry where about 35% of the employees are females.
The First Lady disclosed that the series of meetings demonstrate her commitment to stand with the women of Liberia, stressing that she feels the struggle they go through and remains committed to helping them.
“I thought it was important to speak with you and find out what it is like- your everyday life here at the Ministry of Transport,” Mrs. Weah told dozens of female employees in the Ministry’s conference room Thursday, February 20, 2020.
“I am not coming out as if I can solve everybody’s problems,” Mrs. Weah asserted, adding: “I would like to know your problem; because your problem is my problem and it becomes the government’s problem.”
The Liberian First Lady also disclosed that in addition to enabling her better understand their plights so as adequately advocate for them, the interaction was necessary because it allowed the women the opportunity to know her well and her plans for them.
“I know that most of you who probably haven’t met me face-to-face just hear about the First Lady of Liberia. I think it is important for me to interact with you,” she emphasized.
Mrs. Weah continued: “I think it is important to let you know that I am a part of you. We may not see each other every day; but you can meet the First Lady and say you know what, this woman is a down-to-earth person.”
The First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to always grant the women a listening ear even if she can’t solve all of their problems.
A release said the ongoing series of meetings are part of Mrs. Weah’s flagship program, the ‘She’s You’ Movement.
The initiative is a national advocacy campaign aimed at improving the lives of women for a better and prosperous Liberia.
Prior to the fruitful meeting with the women at Transport Ministry in Monrovia, the First Lady went through the required processes and obtained her driver’s license.
Speaking earlier, Acting Transport Minister expressed delight over Mrs. Weah’s visit at the Ministry to not only interact with the women but also go through the process to obtain a driver’s license.
Minister Sirleaf Tyler recalled that the President, His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah also obtained his license, describing the decision of the first family as an exemplary leadership.
Minister Tyler also disclosed significant progress by the Ministry towards ensuring gender equality, citing that at least 35 percent of the Ministry’s employees are females.
According to him, females are well represented at all levels including the top management.
