Monrovia, Liberia – As the government of Liberia grapple with issue of improving sanitation in Liberia, a local non-Governmental Organization, Community Development Services (CODES) working in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector of Liberia has brought about some level of improvement in the sector.

The organization through its local innovation platform has produced commodes with the aimed of buttressing the efforts of the Government of Liberia and its Local and international partners in creating an enabling environment for WASH.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Community Development Services, Tamba Bundor, the intervention is intended to help improve the sanitation status of rural and urban dwellers in the country.

“This innovation by our organization is a drive aimed at adding value to sanitation and meeting the 2030 target of sanitation declared by the United Nations”, Bundor said.

He said the intervention will discourage the construction of pit latrines which is not guaranteed and serves as a channel of pollution.

Mr. Bundor disclosed that the commodes are durable because they were produced with cement and not clay as the ones imported to Liberia.

“A barrel can also be connected to the commode to make flush very easy for the users” the CEO noted

The CODES Chief Executive noted that the commode has section where pipes can be installed for flushing.

He asserted that his organization is intending to train more artisans in producing more of those commodes in the rural parts of Liberia.

Mr. Bundor indicated that this intervention is crucial to Community Led Total Sanitation Initiative spearheaded by the Government of Liberia.

The Community Development Services Head is encouraging private homes, business entities and learning institutions to support this initiative.

“We need the support of the Government of Liberia, including local and international partners to promote this innovation”, CODES Head noted.

The Community Development Services was established in April 1997 and since then it has been implementing WASH projects across Liberia.
