MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Captain of Liberia’s National Football Team-Lone Star, Sam Johnson, has joined the fight against the deadly coronavirus outbreak in Liberia.
Captain Johnson’s foundation launches awareness campaign in Monrovia, educating people about the virus and its preventive methods as well as donating consignment of food items plus cash to health workers.
Mr. Johnson on Thursday, April 2, 2020 became the first Liberian athlete to donate to the fight against the virus in his home Country.
The Lone Star captain who plays in the United States Major Soccer League for Real Salt Lake donated thirty-five bags of rice, fifty- thousand Liberian dollars, along with several detergents and water barrels to health workers assigned at the 14th Military Hospital, and several other bags of rice to the Women in Peace building Network.
Presenting the materials on his behalf, Murphy Diggs, an official of the Sam Johnson Foundation, said:” The Liberian International is greatly concern about the health crisis facing the Country and wants Liberians to work together in eradicating the virus.”
According to Mr.Diggs, the Liberian International, who is also locked down in the United States, urged Liberians not to allow the virus defeat them, but they should eliminate the virus.
Sam Johnson, according to Diggs, wants health workers attending to coronavirus patients at the 14th Military Hospital be adequately supported.
“Sam wants those health workers to have food on their tables for them and their children, as they moved into the medical wards to cater to their patients. He really appreciates the role of those health workers who are on the frontline fighting the virus”, Diggs said as he handed over the donation to the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) of Liberia Director General.
Receiving the donation, the Director General designate of the NPHIL, Dr. Mosoka Fallah, praised the Liberian Footballer for identifying with the health workers on the frontline, adding that the donation signifies that Liberians home and abroad are united in the fight against the Covid-19.
“Every time Liberians come and make donations, it signals a very good thing. We are very grateful for recognizing the role of our health workers in these times,” Dr. Mosoka Fallah responded.
Besides, the NPHIL and the Women in Peace Building Network of Liberia, the Sam Johnson Foundation also gave several water containers at several intersections and communities to help enforce measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Liberia has recorded its seventh COVID-19 case so far, with the first three cases expected to be released from hospital soon.
