MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has condemned the military takeover in Mali, and called for the immediate release of detained President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse.
President Keita and Prime Minister Cisse were arrested and forced to resign on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, by soldiers at a military camp in the capital, Bamako.
But, speaking during virtual extra-ordinary conference convened by ECOWAS on Thursday, August 20, 2020, President Weah described the action of the military as gross breach of ECOWAS Protocols.
The Liberian Leader urged his counterparts in the sub-region not to allow such violation of the protocols, which speak against the military overthrow of a sitting president.
Speaking with ELBC minutes after the conference, Information Minister Eugene Nagbe said:” The President’s position was buttressed by the Presidents of the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Guinea among others.”
Meanwhile, Minister Nagbe said:” ECOWAS is reviewing a suggestion made by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, to impose sanction on military leaders who are masterminds of the coup in Mali.”
