House of Rep’s Committees to review anti-rape petition

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Five Committees of the House of Representatives are expected to review an anti-rape petition and report within two weeks.

The Committees are Gender, Judiciary, Security, Health, including Ways and Means.

ELBC Legislative Reporter said the decision to review the anti-rape petition was reached by the House of Representatives recently, following its submission by rape petitioners and advocates.

The anti-rape petition is seeking amendment and enforcement of the Country’s rape law.

It also wants increase budgetary allocation for the Judiciary, to facilitate speedy trial of rape and other Sexual and Gender Based Violent cases.

In a related development, Civil Service Organizations have been urged to work devoid of sentiments and emotions to find remedy in the growing wave of rape cases in Liberia.

Gender Minister Willamette Tarr made the disclosure, while calling for Early Childhood Education on SGBV in schools.

Minister Tarr said:” SGBV education for children in schools across the Country is crucial to release awareness about rape and other forms of domestic violence.”

According to her, children would grow up knowing their basic rights and protect each other, if they begin SGBV Early Childhood Education.

Minister Tarr said:” The Gender Ministry has concluded the development of a roadmap, along with the Ministries of Labor, Internal Affairs, Education and Justice to end SGBV issues.”
