MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has endorsed the roadmap document aimed at ending Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in Liberia.
The roadmap document was developed by the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on SGBV and presented to President Weah on Monday, AUGUST 31, 2020, following a one day strategic meeting held at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, outside Monrovia.
According to the document, a two-day conference on rape and other forms of SGBV is expected to take place in Monrovia, beginning this Thursday, September 3, 2020.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the meeting, President Weah said he will begin reviewing the document and subsequently take action to end rape and SGBV in the Country.
The Liberian Leader added that following the review of the document and the holding of another strategic meeting, the Executive will begin to engage with the Legislature and Judiciary.
Meanwhile, President Weah is urging Civil Society Organizations and Human Rights Advocates to join Government to take action against rape.
At the same time, Justice Minister Cllr. Musa Dean, said plans are underway to decentralize Criminal Court ‘E’.
Cllr. Dean emphasized that stakeholders within the Judicial System are concerned about the increase in rape cases and serious about the fight against rape.
Meanwhile, the Justice Minister said:” The Government will be sensitive to the penalties of rape, because Liberia is signatory to many international treaties”.
