MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Government of Liberia has broken grounds for the construction of the Duala Market, Bushrod Island in Monrovia.

The cost of the modern market facilities is put at US$3.8Million and is expected to benefit marketers in the Duala Communities and Bushrod Island if constructed.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, President George Weah said:” The construction of the market is geared towards catering to difficulties faced by marketers in the area”.

According to the Liberian leader, the market when constructed will address the poor conditions under which the market has operated.

He also stated that the market will ease the huge traffic congestion caused by selling in the streets. President Weah then reaffirmed the Government’s obligation to the people adding that his Government will always care for the wellbeing of the people of Liberia.

President Weah also used the occasion to applaud Government’s International partners for President George Weah is calling on citizens to make wise decisions in the upcoming referendum.

He said the decisions should make meaningful impacts on the lives of all citizens.

The Liberian Chief Executive also used the occasion to cautioned citizens not to allow politics to divide them because according to him, the development of Liberia should be the concern of all citizens.

At the same time, the President of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA), Alice Yeegban, said the LMA, will remain supportive of the government’s agenda and thanked President Weah, for undertaking market construction as a meaningful initiative to better the lives of marketers.

Madam Yeegban said: “Plans are being worked out for members of the Association to get involve in agriculture activities because the LMA agriculture activities will be carried out across all 15 counties of Liberia”.

She pointed out, “this is one of the ways the marketers can join the Liberia Government in the fight to curtail poverty in the country”.

The Executive Director of the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE), Yeke Quiwu, doing the project’s overview said the market will contain two floors, with 50 stores, including offices, warehouses, and a fence with a lighting system.

Mr. Quiwu said: “The project will be implemented in the space of 11 months but I want you, marketers, as beneficiaries to work along with the contractors for the success of the project”.
