MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United States Government has placed sanction on Grand Cape Mount County Senator, Cllr. Varney Sherman, for corruption.
According to the United States Government, Senator Sherman, in 2010, offered bribes to multiple judges associated with the famous Global Witness trial.
The US Government also said the Grand Cape Mount County Senator had an undisclosed conflict of interest with the judge who ultimately returned a ‘Not Guilty’ verdict in July, 2019.
A US Government statement released Wednesday, December 9, 2020, said Senator Sherman has routinely paid judges to decide cases in his favor, and allegedly facilitated payments to Liberian politicians to support the impeachment of former Associate Justice, Kabina Ja’neh, who had ruled against him.
The alleged acts of bribery, according to the United States, demonstrate a larger pattern of behavior to exercise influence over the Liberian Judiciary and the Ministry of Justice.
All properties and interest in property of Cllr. Sherman in the United States or in the possession or control of the US, according to the statement, are blocked and must be reported to the US Treasury Office of Foreign Assets and Control.
Meanwhile, Senator Sherman has not politically commented on his latest designation by the US Government.
