National Elections Commission halts voting in Normon-da-tono Town, Gbarpolu County

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The National Elections Commission has halted voting in Nomodatono, Town, Gbarpolu County.

The Chairperson of the Commission Davidetta Brown- Lassana said this is due to the constant violence at the polling center.

Commissioner Brown- Lassanah disclosed to ELBC Tuesday, December 15, 2020, that some of the polling staff have been found while others are still in hiding as a result of the violence. She said at least 20 officials of the Commission were deployed when the incident occurred.

Recently, a local town chief seized the ballot boxes on election day, since then, unrest between rival supporters have persisted, thereby preventing the conduct of elections in Nomodatono, Gbarpolu county.

Madam Brown-Lansanah said elections will not recommence in Gbarpolu County until calm is restored in the area.

In a related development, the NEC Chairperson has disclosed that until calm returns to three locations in Grand Kru County, elections will not be completed in the County.

Recently, rival supporters again stormed the NEC offices in the county demanding the speedy announcement of the provisional results.

Meanwhile, Madam Brown-Lansanah has announced the holding of elections in some parts of Upper Nimba and Grand Gedeh counties.

She noted that voting did not take place in these places due to other issues that were beyond the Commission’s control.
