MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) says calm has returned to Norma-Da-Ton-Non Town in Gbarpolu County following the recent electoral violence.
Police Spokesman, Moses Carter, made the disclosure Wednesday, December 16, 2020, in an ELBC interview.
According to the Police Spokesman, the LNP has deployed its officers in the disputed area for NEC to conduct the re-run of the election in a safe environment.
Mr. Carter said at least fourteen suspects have been arrested and are being brought to the Police Headquarters to investigate their alleged destruction of ballot boxes.
He also clarified that Madam Botoe Kanneh, one of the candidates, was not kidnapped as it was reported by her supporters.
The Liberia National Police is urging candidates and their supporters in Gbarpolu County to remain peaceful as it investigates the situation.
At the same time, NEC Chairperson, Madam Davidetta Brown-Lansanah, has clarified that the Commission has not announced a date for the re-run of the election in the area.
Madam Brown-Lansanah said the Commission wants to be assured of the safety of its workers and election materials.
The NEC Chairperson is also urging the Liberia National Police to ensure all candidates are safe and available before the re-run is conducted.
According to her, the rerun of the election in Yama-Da-Ton-Non Town, Gbarpolu County is crucial to declare a winner of the Senatorial Election in the County.
Meanwhile, Madam Davidetta Brown-Lansanah said the Commission remains committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election.
