MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has clarified that there is not a new variant of the Coronavirus confirmed in the Liberia.

Government’s clarification comes amid public speculation that a variant of the virus was confirmed on Wednesday, February 4, 2021, in Monrovia.

A Ministry of Information release issued Wednesday, February 3, 2021, however, quotes      Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah as saying some test samples have been sent abroad for examination, in keeping with World Health Organization (WHO) health protocols.

Dr. Jallah said:” The examination of test samples overseas is a standard practice, which does not suggest that there is an emergence of a new variant of the disease.”

Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia is calling on those spreading the rumors to desist, as health authorities have received no such confirmation.

The Liberian Government has assured that it would duly inform the public of any new development in the fight against Coronavirus in the Country.

At the same time, the Liberian Government says it has fulfilled its financial obligation with the African Union (AU) ahead of the 34th Ordinary Session of heads of state.

Foreign Minister Maxwell Kemayah said:” The needed funds were raised through the intervention of President George Weah to settle the Country’s 2021 Legacy Arrears.”

Minister Kemayah said:” The fulfillment of the Country’s financial obligation now paves the way to participate in the upcoming ordinary session from February 3rd-7th.”
