MONROVIA, LIBERIA- The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), Wilson Tarpeh says the agency will ensure that Liberia remains a forbidden destination for toxic trade and illegal chemical shipment.

Professor Tarpeh speaking Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at a press conference in Monrovia said EPA technicians confiscated about 2.2 metric tons of illegally imported chemicals at a warehouse in New Hope Community, Paynesville.

He said, the chemical was labeled as a sodium hypochlorite known as bleach, which is often used as a disinfecting agent for drinking water treatment.

Mr. Tarpeh disclosed that the chemical contains a second label use to prevent chlorine loss in swimming pools.  He said several studies have proven that cyanuric acid causes kidney tissue damage that leads to kidney failure.

The EPA Boss noted that the seizure comes just three days after the Agency announced its nationwide chemical inventory intended to regulate the import, transportation, handling, sale, and use of chemicals in Liberia.
