MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Education is warning against tuition hike by schools, amid the economic hardship in the country.

Education Minister Ansu Sonii told ELBC’s Super Morning Show Tuesday, October 12, 2021, that the Ministry will not relent to take punitive action against any school that arbitrarily increases tuition.

Minister Sonii said:” The Ministry has dispatched its surveillance team of county and district education officers to monitor schools and ensure compliance.”

The Education Boss’ statement comes amid reports of tuition hike across the country, including public schools prompting outcry from parents.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the provision of quality education for Liberians.

Meanwhile, despite strong warnings from the Ministry, citizens of Grand Cape Mount County are expressing concerns over the matter.

According to ELBC Grand Cape Mount County Correspondent, various public schools have increased their tuition from the prescribed one-thousand to three-thousand Liberian Dollars.

Our Correspondent noted that the situation is affecting parents’ ability to register their children for the 2021-2022 Academic year, which commences November next month.

She quotes parents as saying the increment will hinder the enrolment of their children into schools for this academic year.

Speaking to the Grand Cape Mount County situation, Minister Sonii said such has not come to his attention, and that he will engage schools in the county to confirm the authenticity of the information.
