United Workers Union says poor safety standards caused recent train accident

by Joseph Sayon

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United Workers Union of Liberia (UWUL) has attributed the recent train accident that resulted to the death of two employees of the Company, to poor safety standards.

UWUL is the bargaining Representative of the ArcelorMittal-Liberia workers.

The Union’s Secretary General, Dave Sneh, said:” ArcelorMittal does not have standardized safety regime for trains transporting iron ore from Yekepa to the Port of Buchanan.”

Mr. Sneh, however, called on the Company to suspend the movement of its trains until a standardized safety regime is put into place.

He told a news conference on Monday, January 17, 2022, that the Company must put into place an improved radar system, and stop the use of mobile phone to guide the movement of the trains.

Mr. Sneh said if ArcelorMittal fails to address the workers’ safety concerns, they will conduct unspecified action to compel the management ensure their safety.
