MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has expressed strong opposition to the military takeover in Burkina Faso.

President Weah also condemned the dissolution of the democratically-elected Government of President Roch Kaboré.

Addressing a virtual ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit on Friday, January 28,2022, President Weah reiterated  Liberia’s zero tolerance for coup d’états.

The Liberian Leader also called on the Military Authorities in Burkina Faso to, without delay, restore the duly elected President to power and return the Country to constitutional democratic order.

He said:” In order to address the frequent occurrences of coups in the region; there must be an urgent revise to the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.”

President Weah told his colleagues that such revision must include engaging stakeholders and the military, in situations where ECOWAS Early Warning Mechanisms clearly predict threat of coup or political and security instability in a member state.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS says it may consider imposing sanctions against Burkina Faso, but will first send two missions to the Country to hold talks with coup leaders.
