MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has requested the Ministry of Justice to submit the names of five-hundred inmates, excluding rapists and armed robbers, to be pardoned.
The decision is pursuant to Article 59 of the Liberian Constitution, which grants the President the right to grant Executive Clemency and suspension of prison sentence under the law.
The Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel McGill, announced the latest decision, on behalf of President George Weah, at a major press conference at the Executive Mansion on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
Minister McGill said:” The Justice Minister will use its discretion on inmates to be pardoned, as part of the clemency.”
At the same time, President Weah has suspended the two years prison sentence of former Defense Minister Brownie Samukai, following his conviction by the Supreme Court of Liberia.
The Liberian Leader has also directed the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, along with the Justice Ministry, to make full payment of the outstanding balance of the stolen Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) pension money.
However, Mr. Samukai, according to Minister McGill, will work with the Justice Ministry to enter into a stipulation for the full payment of the AFL Pension Fund.
Minister McGill said:” The overall decision is in the spirit of reconciliation, and move to transform the Country into a haven of peace.”
