MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has formally opened the 2nd ECOWAS Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa, taking place for the first time in Liberia.
President Weah said:” The opportunity for Liberia to host this year’s congress will showcase the potential and strength of the Accountancy profession in the Country, and the West African sub-region.”
He said the conference intends to enhance the economic growth of both the private and public sectors, through the development of professional networks of competence and high standards.
The President commended the leadership of the Liberian Institute of Certified Public Accountants, foe accepting the challenge to host the Joint Congress for the first time.
He said such program provides the basis for knowledge-sharing amongst professional networks, and uplifts the quality of Accountancy within the sub-region.
President Weah stated that the theme: “ Good Governance and Sustainable Development for Regional Prosperity” corresponds with core of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s 2063 aspiration for Africa.
Meanwhile, the President of the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa is urging accountants to stand up to the challenge of changing the narratives in the sub-region.
Madam Comfort Olu Mini said countries in the region are confronted with many challenges that range from illiteracy, poor access to health and education, among others.
However, Madam Olu Mini said: “Such narratives can be changed through sustained advocacy and supporting governments with ideas that will reposition the region as major player in global development.”
According to her, the 2nd Joint ECOWAS/Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa Congress will avail the opportunity interrogate socio-economic dynamics in the sub-region.
Also speaking, the President of the Liberia Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Victor Tanwone, said:” The partnership regional accountancy body and ECOWAS seek to foster good governance, economic growth and cross-border trade.”
Mr. Tanwone said hosting the conference in Liberia for the first time has showcased the technical competence and capability of the LICPA.
