MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The European Union (EU) Head of Delegation wants Liberia to abolish the death penalty.
Ambassador Laurent Delahousse said:” The EU will be excited if the Liberian Government passes a legislation to finally abolish death penalty in respect to life.”
Ambassador Delahousse noted that it is not the right of anyone to take away the life of another person, on the basis of the commission of a crime.
He added that the act violates the principles of the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights, which states that everyone has the right to life.
The EU Diplomat called on the Liberian Government, through the National Legislature, to ensure that a bill is crafted to abolish the penalty.
He made the statement on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at a one-day forum on the abolition of death penalty organized by Rescue Alternatives in Monrovia.
The Liberian Constitution, which still upholds the death penalty, is in conflict with international treaties the Country has acceded, on the abolition of the death penalty.
Those treaties are yet to be domesticated.
