MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia is liaising with the United States, to ensure a comprehensive investigation in the diplomatic passport saga involving Bassirou Kante.
On May 10, 2022, President George Weah directed Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Kemayah to investigate information about Mr. Kante’s diplomatic passport, after he was reportedly arrested by the FBI in the United States.
Speaking at the regular Ministry of Information Press Conference on Thursday, May 19, 2022, in Monrovia, Foreign Minister Kemayah said:” I personally spoke with the US Ambassador to broker a corridor of information sharing with his government , in the passport saga.”
In addition, Minister Kemah disclosed that the Liberian Government has notified the US Government through diplomatic means, to provide sensitive documents and assistance that will aid and conclude the investigation.
The Liberian Government requested the US to produce a colored- copy of the controversial diplomatic passport that was reportedly confiscated by the FBI, and also assist with forensic examinations expertise.
Minister Kemayah noted that without this assistance from the US Government, the investigation will not fully be completed as expected.
Meanwhile, Minister Kemayah has also requested that President Weah extends the date for the submission of the ongoing investigation to June 6,2022.
President Weah’s previous directive ordered the Minister to investigate and report on June 17,2022.
He said due to the ongoing negotiation with US Government to assist in the investigation, he is confident the final report will be available by June 6.
Besides the ongoing diplomatic passport saga with Mr. Kante, the entire Bureau of Passports and Visas at the Foreign Ministry is c urrentlt undergoing procedural investigation.
Minister De-Maxwell Kemayah assured the public that every investigation that will be condu c t ed will be done in accordance with the rule of law.
