MONROBVIA, LIBERIA-The visiting UN Goodwill Ambassador for Africa, Jaha Dukureh, has hailed Liberia’s cultural values and tradition.
Madam Dukureh said:” Liberia, like the rest of Africa, has a rich culture that the rest of the world envies.”
However, Madam Dukureh wants the abolition of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) from the practice of Liberian culture.
She said the good thing about Liberian culture can be kept but not ones that promote violence against women.
Madam Dukureh, a Gambian National and FGM survivor, was speaking on Sunday, November 20, 2022, after being honored by the National Council of Chiefs and Elders of Liberia.
The UN Goodwill Ambassador added that Arica does not need the West to ad vise it about cultural practices, but African themselves.
She then pledged to work with the Traditional Council and UN Women Liberia to ensure that violence is kept out of Liberian culture.
