China’s Two Sessions, A Political System that Bears the Agenda for 1.4 Billion

Beijing Sunday, March 5, 2023 – The First Session of the 14th National People’s Congress, China’s top Legislature, has convened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Supreme State Authority is meeting up to 11 March, bringing together nearly three thousand members drawn from all walks of life.

Earlier on Saturday, President Xi Jinping joined other Chinese Leaders at the opening of National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China’s top political advisory body, to mark the start of the “two sessions”.

China has been resilient amid global economic shocks and has been gathering momentum to support its strategic goal of building a great modern socialist country.

This year’s “Two Sessions” meeting is key because it will deliver a new cabinet following election of leaders of state institutions.

Li Keqiang, the Premier of the State Council, will deliver the central government’s work report which usually reviews past achievements and sets development targets for the ensuing year and beyond.

The NPC Members and Political Advisors will then review and discuss the report, as well as reports of the national legislature, the top court and the top procuratorate.

This year’s Two Session gathering is taking place on the back of the 20th Communist Party of China National Congress in October 2022, which proffered several crucial development targets to be pursued by the government, key among that is modernization.

Premier Li Keqiang has a lot on his plate, a work report for the last five years and the 2023 Agenda for 1.4 billion people.

One thing that is sure is that Chinese state authority has consistently boasted of extraordinary development achievements, particularly realizing its First Centenary Goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects on schedule.

Under the Communist Party and with President Xi Jinping at its code, the Peoples Republic of China continues to rejuvenate irreversibly.

Now, attention will be on efforts to realize China’s Second Century Goal of building a great modern socialist country in all respects by the middle of this century as mandated by the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
