MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The US State Department 2022 Human Rights Report has praised the Liberian Government for cooperating with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees and other humanitarian organizations.
According to the report, the Government has provided protection and assistance to refugees, returning refugees, or asylum seekers, as well as other persons of concern.
The report said the Liberian Government has also established a system for providing protection to refugees and asylum seekers.
It highlighted that the Government provided a prima facie mode of recognition for refugees from Cote d’Ivoire, granting automatic refugee status, without a formal hearing to those who fled because of the 2011 post-election violence.
During the period under review, the report said that the Liberian Government complied with the UNHCR’s recommendation to end refugee status for Ivoirian effective June 30, 2022.
During the year, the Government resettled, offered residency, and assisted in the voluntary return of refugees, while asylum seekers who presented themselves to UNHCR and LRRPC provided temporary protection as their cases were being adjudicated.
