MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The high rate of pre-trial detention at the Monrovia Central Prison is said to be causing food shortage and overcrowdedness.
According to the Deputy Prison Superintendent, Justine Suah, the facility does not have any more space to absorb incoming inmates.
Superintendent Suah told reporters recently that the situation has become a serious embarrassment to managing the current population of prisoners.
He urged the courts to institute speedy trial for inmates who have gone up to six court terms without trial.
The Deputy Monrovia Central Prison Superintendent also called on the National Legislature to consider the speedy passage of the bill granting the Bureau of Correction as an autonomous agency.
