MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has expressed “concern” about violence linked to the upcoming elections in Liberia on October 10.
On Friday, October 29, 2023, at least two people and twenty others were injured during clashes between supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the opposition Unity Party (UP).
A statement from the UN Human Rights Office also pointed out other outbreaks of violence in Nimba, Montserrado, and Grand Cape Mount Counties, ahead of next Tuesday’s General Elections.
OHCHR Spokesperson Seif Magango said:” The organization has also documented eight attacks on journalists by various political actors, two of which resulted in injuries.”
The UN Human Rights Office has further condemned the use of language which “could amount to hate speech.”
