MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Civil Law Court has summoned the newly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, Cllr. Fonati Koffa.
The summon followed a petition for Declaratory Judgment filed by the Unity Party (UP) against the National Elections Commission (NEC) and Cllr. Fonati Koffa.
In the petition, the UP alleged that the Grand Kru County Representative is an American citizen and therefore not qualified to occupy an elected position under the law.
The UP has cited Article 4, Section 1 of the Act to amend or nullify certain provisions of the Aliens and Nationality Law, relating to citizenship and restoring rights lost.
The petition, among other things, noted that a Liberian citizen who holds the citizenship of another country shall not be eligible for any elective public office unless he or she renounces the citizenship of that country.
The Court has also ordered Cllr. Fonati Koffa and the National Elections Commission (NEC) to file their returns on or before January 25, 2024.
