MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Chair of the US Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations has backed calls for the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
Congressman Chris Smith said:” In recent decades, Liberians have suffered untold human rights violations and economic crimes, while perpetrators acted with near-complete impunity during the Country’s multiple civil wars.
According to Congressman Smith, minimal efforts have been made in Liberia to address war crimes with a recommendation in the 2009 Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report to establish a court to ensure justice.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, Congressman Smith acknowledged President Boakai’s commitment to the establishment of the Court to end impunity, and for the nation to finally heal.
He said the US Congress is also closely monitoring the situation and sees the Court as a way to advance good governance and healing for the people of Liberia.
