MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has signed the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty and ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury in New York, the United States.
The ratification is aimed at enhancing efforts to protect marine biodiversity in the high seas, while preserving fish stocks critical to food security.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director, Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo said:” The Treaty will promote sustainable fisheries, and safeguard essential marine ecosystems. The signings align with the Treaty’s aim of protecting crucial ocean areas that transcend national borders, but directly impact coastal communities.”
He expressed optimism that the Treaty will also curb the illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing practices that have over the years permeated the society.
Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo called for a collaborative approach to achieving the Treaty’s goals, highlighting initiatives already underway in the ECOWAS Region.
