Vice Pres. Koung Attends COP 29 in Azerbaijan

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Vice President Jeremiah Koung is in Baku, Azerbaijan, representing President Joseph Boakai at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The significant international event is scheduled began on November 11 and will end on the 22.

During COP 29, Vice President Koung is set to engage in crucial discussions surrounding global climate initiatives, sustainability goals, and energy transitions.

He will also address high-level sessions attended by Heads of State and Governments beginning today, November 12 to the 13.

Vice President Koung will emphasize Liberia’s increasing vulnerability to the effects of climate change, particularly citing the severe flooding incidents that have impacted communities in Margibi, Grand Bassa, and Montserrado Counties.

The Liberian Vice President will also call for enhanced global cooperation to effectively combat climate change.

Meanwhile, the Vice President is set to participate in a special session with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, alongside other leaders from developing nations on the margins of COP 29 in Baku.

The special will focus on addressing the critical climate challenges confronting the Global South.

According to a release issued recently, Vice President Koung will also hold bilateral talks with influential leaders in climate actions and key financial partners.

He is anticipated to advocate for increased international assistance for developing nations, with particular emphasis on adaptation, loss and damage, as well as financial support for climate initiatives.

The Vice President’s speech will also include a renewed effort to establish the Loss and Damaged Fund aimed at providing targeted financial aid to vulnerable countries experiencing the most severe impacts of climate change.
