Pres. Boakai Requests Mano River Union Member States’ Investment in Youthful Population

FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE-President Joseph Boakai wants member states of the Mano River Union to invest in the empowerment and growth of the youthful population.

President Boakai said:” Investing in the growth and improvement of young people remains pivotal to sustaining economic growth and development.”

Speaking at a meeting with heads of the MRU Secretariat in Freetown on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Liberian Leader admonished them to take practical steps in improving the livelihood of the young generation.

According to the President, the MRU as an institution, must begin to prioritize programs and policies that aim to promote and protect the youthful population in the sub-region.

President Joseph Boakai then lauded the Heads of the Mano River Union Secretariat for work done over the years in ensuring the institution remains effective and functional.

Meanwhile, the Head of the MRU Secretariat, Simeon Moribah, has the underscored the need for enhanced collaboration and partnerships in sustaining the organization.

Mr. Moribah said:” The effective operations of the MRU can be achieved with the support of donors and partners. The MRU has benefited from the partnership forged with the UN, African Development Bank, and USAID, among others.”

The Head of the MRU Secretariat described the Liberian Leader to the organization as historic and urged other heads of member states to follow suit.

At the same time, Liberia and Sierra Leone have a joint communique reaffirming their commitments to promoting cross border cooperation to boost the peaceful coexistence between border communities and cultural diversity, as well as economic activities.

The two countries also agreed to support peaceful and democratic transition of power aimed at maintaining peace and security at the continental and international levels.

Reading the resolution on Tuesday, Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow-Nyanti said:” Both nations also agreed on partnership to advance transformative initiatives in diverse sectors, to create opportunities for economic growth and development in the Mano River Union.”

Minister Nyanti quotes Presidents Joseph Boakai and Julius Maada-Bio of Sierra Leone as underscoring their dedication to unite the sub-region to create the necessary conditions to feed the people and create more jobs.

According to the Resolution, the Heads of State also expressed their continued support to the principles of the African Union and United Nations, particularly on peace, security, and development.
