MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Labor has denied Alien Work Permit to forty-four expatriates seeking employment at AFCONS Infrastructure, a sub-contracting company of Arcelor Mittal in Yekepa, Nimba County.
A recent Labor Ministry release quotes Labor Minister Cooper Kruah as denying AFCONS Infrastructure Management the permit after carefully examining their work application pursuant to Chapter 45, Section 1 of the Decent Work Act of 2015.
The release further quotes Minister Kruah as mandating AFCONS Management to do due diligence in giving preference to qualified Liberians, with emphasis on those already in the company’s employ.
At the same time, the workers and Management of AFCONS have resolved their differences, ending a nine-day strike action, following the swift intervention by the Labor Ministry.
The Labor Ministry release disclosed that workers at the AFCONS recently embarked on a go-slow, outlining several grievances ranging from bad working conditions, wage disparities, lack of safe drinking water, and general welfare.
The release said the Labor Minister is, however, calling on investment companies in the country to ensure the total betterment of their workers to prevent frequent industrial unrest.
