Armed Forces of Liberia’s Commander-In-Chief Urges Liberians…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, President Joseph Boakai, has urged Liberians to use this year’s Armed Forces Day celebration to reflect on the extraordinary contributions of the country’s military personnel.

 President Boakai said:” The unwavering commitment and patriotism of the AFL have, over the years, served as the bedrock of the nation’s defense. The AFL’s tireless efforts have been a pivotal milestone towards the peace and stability of the country.”

The Liberian Leader’s remarks were contained in a statement he delivered at the 68th Armed Forces Day celebration on Tuesday, February 11, in Monrovia.

The Commander-in-Chief, acknowledging the enormous challenges confronting the Army, commended the force for exhibiting high professionalism, integrity, and excellence in the face of adversity.

Meanwhile, President Boakai has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working tirelessly to improve the living conditions of personnel of the AFL.

He said the government will continue to provide all necessary training and resources to support the AFL’s effectiveness.

As part of efforts to improve the living conditions of the Army, the Liberian Leader instructed the Minister of National Defense to partner with relevant entities to renovate military facilities in Maryland, Nimba, and Boni Counties.

President Boakai extended appreciation to Liberia’s international partners for the level of support in enhancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces over the years.

The Liberian Chief Executive said:” Collaborative efforts and shared resources will continue to play a pivotal role in addressing challenges and advancing the country’s National Defense Agenda.

At the same time, the Commander-in-Chief of the Sierra Leonean Army, Julius Maada-Bio, charged the Liberian Army to uphold democratic values, respect for human rights, and maintain integrity and patriotism.

According to the Sierra Leonean President, upholding these values will ensure peace and stability in Liberia and the wider West African region.

The one-time ECOMOG soldier in Liberia said it is important for the men and women of the AFL to stand firm as guardians of democratic order, defending the constitutional government and remaining above politics.

He also stressed the need for strengthened civil-military relations, capacity building, and regional collaboration.

This year’s Armed Forces Day is being celebrated under the theme: Sustaining Peace and Security Through Stakeholders’ Engagement: The Role of the Armed Forces of Liberia.

Also speaking at the program, Defense Minister Geraldine George said the AFL needs holistic financial support and more international partnerships for enhanced professionalism and an increase in personnel.

Defense Minister George said:” Despite efforts by the Government of Liberia in supporting the Army, there remain challenges that need to be adequately addressed. The welfare of the women and men in arms remains a paramount concern.”

She hailed the government for the efforts in renovating several military facilities across the country, terming the efforts as a huge boost in improving the living conditions of the AFL.

Defense Minister Geraldine George noted that renovation works are progressing at targeted barracks, which will enhance the morale of the Army.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister George has described 2024 as a successful year for Liberia’s Defense Sector, achieving a significant milestone that strengthened the sector, stressing that the AFL’s presence in peacekeeping missions in Africa highlights its capability to support the sustenance of peace at home and abroad.

She said:” The AFL continues to sustain security and support stability under the UN’s mandate, which indicates Liberia’s growing commitment to international peace and solidarity.

The Defense Minister said Liberia is currently facing environmental threats, with the Coast Guard Base currently being threatened by coastal erosion that needs to be addressed immediately.
