MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate has mandated its Joint Committee on Transport, Concession, Mines and Energy and Judiciary to investigate the operations of two companies allegedly engaging in activities beyond their mandates.
The companies include BIO-CHICO and Bea Mountain operating in Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount Counties.
A communication from Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe triggered the Senate’s decision.
Senator Snowe said:” BIO-CHICO Mining Company, in addition to its mining operations, has taken on trucking of iron ore, while Bea Mountain Mining Company is producing its mineral water.”
Senator Snowe noted that the actions of these companies are depriving Liberian-owned businesses of opportunities that could contribute to economic empowerment and job creation.
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee Chair on Land, Mines, and Environment, Simeon Taylor wants the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), to develop an effective land management system.
Senator Taylor said:” Such a system will help the Land Authority to address some of the lingering land issues in the country.”
He made the call on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the official takeover ceremony of the LLA’s new Chairman, and expressed his desire to see the country’s land sector improve and issues affecting the sector address with timeliness.
The Grand Cape Mount County Senator, at the same time, lauded the efforts of stakeholders and actors in the land sector in advancing the sector for the good of the nation and its people.
