MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberia Midwives Association (LMA) has expressed continued marginalization of midwives within the country’s Healthcare System.
The LMA said despite the critical role it plays in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, it continues to face systematic exclusion and disparities.
In an interview on LNTV’s “Liberia Today” program on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, LMA President Marian Tucker-Boima called on national stakeholders, policymakers, and the public to support midwives in the fight for equal recognition and fair treatment.
The Association named the recalling of the midwives’ representation in the Division of Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health, and salary disparities, compared to other health caregivers as some major marginalization midwives are enduring.
Madam Boima also decried the limited training opportunities for midwives nationally and internationally, calling on the health authorities to improve their approach toward midwives.
