Liberia Land Authority Issues Fresh Warning against Wetlands Fillings

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberia Land Authority (LLA) has issued a fresh warning to individuals illegally filling in wetlands around the country to desist or face several consequences in keeping with the law.

The LLA Chairman, Samuel Kpakio, issued the warning on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after touring several wetlands in Montserrado County, where individuals have backfilled wetlands.

Chairman Kpakio told journalists that the LLA has taken seriously the misuse of wetlands and is putting in place stringent measures to stop the act.

The LLA Boss said,” The actions by individuals to fill in wetlands continue to pose a threat to communities and citizens.”

During the tour, Kpakio said the entity discovered that several wetlands in the Paynesville and Johnsonville areas have been filled in for the construction of homes, business centers, and factories.

The Liberia Land Authority Chairman said these illegal backfillings have the propensity to put communities into a serious flooding disaster, especially with the Rainy Season at hand.

Meanwhile, the LLA has, with immediate effect, placed a stay order on the filling of wetlands in the Johnsonville Township.

The area is being filled in for the construction of a concrete factory by a Chinese construction company.

The LLA also took similar action in the Dry Rice Market Community in Gainesville, where two Liberians are attempting to construct residences and commercial buildings.

Kpakio said work in the two areas will be halted until the authority can approve, when necessary.

In another development, the LLA Head has announced the setting up of a robust national land dispute task force in the coming days.

Kpakio said the task force will help enforce land laws and deal with individuals fueling land disputes.

The Liberia Land Authority Chairman added that the authority will begin regular touring and inspections of communities across the country to halt land rights and laws violations.
