MONROVIA, LIBERIA-India is assuring Liberia of the safety of Liberians studying in that country in the wake of the ongoing India-Pakistan armed conflict.
India, through its Embassy near Monrovia, informed the Foreign Ministry that there is no immediate threat to the lives and safety of Liberian students studying in India as a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict.
The assurance comes as tension between the two countries erupted in the Kashmir region earlier this week.
A Foreign Ministry release is quoted as saying bilateral talks with the Indian Embassy in Monrovia revealed that no known member of the Liberian Community in India works, studies, or resides anywhere near the region affected by the reported conflict.
The ministry, in its release, disclosed that it has also engaged the President of the Association of Liberian students in India, who confirmed that Liberians are not currently in the disaster zone.
The ministry added that to ensure a firsthand analysis, it will dispatch a delegation to India to assess the security and welfare of Liberian citizens.
In the meantime, consultations that began in 2024 regarding the establishment of Liberia’s diplomatic presence in New Delhi continue between Liberia and India.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said it is also working tirelessly to ensure the safety of Liberians stranded at the border of Myanmar and Thailand.
The ministry indicated that with the support of the Liberian Embassy in Beijing, it is working along with the International Organization on Migration 9IOM) to secure their entry into Thailand and subsequent repatriation.
Concerning reports of a stranded Liberian student in Ukraine, the ministry has disclosed engaging the family, as well as the Ukrainian authorities, and taking the necessary steps in line with international protocols.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its commitment to seeking the welfare of all Liberians abroad.
