MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Governance Commission Acting Chairman, Alaric Tokpa, has underscored the compelling need to revise the Constitution of Liberia.

According to Professor Tokpa, the current Constitution does not conform to present day realities, thus prompting the need for it to be overhauled.

He indicated that the Commission has taken concrete steps to ensure that the Constitution is rewritten to facilitate a robust governance process of the nation.

He disclosed that the Commission, along with the Law Reform Commission, has drafted a blueprint that has been sent to President Joseph Boakai, recommending a positive shift in the Constitution.

The Governance Commission Acting Chairman said,” Once the concept paper is approved by the President and the National Legislature, Articles 91 and 92 will be repealed to give a go ahead for the rewriting of the country’s Constitution.

Acting Chairman Alaric Tokpa spoke on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in Monrovia when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Governance Commission and Ducor Institute.

Meanwhile, Ducor Institute Director Aaron Weah said,” Series of research and planning will be conducted by the two entities, and the initiatives will include the holding of a series of engagements with various stakeholders to redirect the governance structure of Liberia.”

He noted that the research and planning will focus on, among other things, the security and war and economic crimes court, adding that most of the engagements with various sector groups are intended to find practical solutions to the evolving multiple governance challenges.

Aaron Weah said, besides the two entities will undertake joint fundraising with the intent of supporting policy reforms across the Governance Commission’s core mandate areas.
