Pres. Weah dedicates modern Douala Market

by Varflay Kamara

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has dedicated the modern Douala Market on the Bushrod Island, but warned strongly against selling on the main road.

President Weah said:” The market was created to add dignity and value to marketers, and to help decongest the huge traffic situation in the area.”

The Liberian Leader asked the benefiting marketers to make maximum use of the facility, stressing that the market construction is a dream come true for the Government of Liberia.

President Weah acknowledged the financial support of Japan, helping the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) to build such a modern structure for marketers.

He said the decision to construct a modern market in Douala was to improve the poor condition under which market women sell to survive and send their children to school.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of LACE, Quiwu Yekeh, has put the total cost of the market to four-point-eight-million United States Dollars.

Mr. Yekeh said:” Three-point-eight-million was provided by the Government of Japan, while the Liberian Government provided one-million USD for administrative cost.”

According to him, the market building contains one-thousand-five-hundred tables, twenty restrooms and two offices.

Speaking at the official dedication of the market on Thursday, February 10, 2022, he said the market was constructed on one-point-one acre of land.

The LACE Boss said:” The market was constructed to accommodate more marketers and improve the general trading and economic activities in Douala.”

For his part, Montserrado County District-Sixteen, Dixon Seeboe, disclosed that his district has benefited several projects worth almost ten-million USD from the current Government.
