Senate notifies Nat’l Elections Commission of vacancy for the Senatorial Seat of Lofa County

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate has formally notified the National Elections Commission (NEC) of a vacancy for the Senatorial Seat in Lofa County.

A communication from the Senate dated February 16, 2022, said the notification is pursuant of Article 17 of the Liberian Constitution.

Article 37 provides that within thirty days, after a vacancy is created, the National Legislature shall notify NEC no later than ninety days, cause a by-election to be held to fill the vacancy.

Senate Secretary Nanborlor Singbeh, in the communication recounted that winner of said position in Lofa County Brownie Samukai could not be seated as a consequence of a court case.

According to him, Mr.  Samukai was convicted of theft of property, criminal conspiracy, economic sabotage, misuse of public money and money laundering.

The Secretary of the Senate said:” The guilty verdict disallows Mr.  Brownie Samukai to serve as Senator of Lofa County, thereby making the final vacancy for said for said seat in the Liberian Senate.”
