MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Assistant Justice Minister for Litigation, has clarified that President Weah’s pardon on Brownie Samukai is conditional and not an ‘absolute clemency’.
Cllr. Wesseh A. Wesseh said the ‘conditional pardon’ only suspends the two years jail sentence imposed by the High Court against the convicted former Defense Minister.
He said:” The President took such decision in the spirit of reconciliation and in line with the Constitution of Liberia.”
He maintained that the ‘conditional pardon’ on Mr. Samukai’s jail term also seeks to ensure that he settles all liabilities to the Liberian Government.
Speaking on ELBC Bumper Show on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, the Assistant Justice Minister said the Liberian Leader granted Mr. Samukai an ‘absolute clemency’, all his rights would have been restored.
Cllr. Wesseh A.Wesseh then added that Mr. Samukai’s failure to settle his liabilities, the President could withdraw his pardon on the convicted former Defense Minister, paving way for his incarceration, consistent with law.
