MONROVIA, LIBERIA-UN Women Head, Sima Sami Bahous, has assured that the entity will expand its direct support to women leadership in Liberia.
Ms. Bahous said:” UN Women values the partnership it has with Liberia, and will provide more support to empower women organizations and networks.”
She said the institution will also assist to improve agricultural practices, and help the Liberian Government develop a feminist foreign policy.
The UN Women Boss said such support aligns with the priorities of the Government and the strategic plan of UN Women-participation of women in leadership, economic empowerment, peace and security, climate and gender equality, and gender sensitive budgeting.
Ms. Bahous made the commitments on Monday, September 19, 2022, during a meeting with Liberia’s Gender Minister, Williametta Saydee-Tarr, on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly.
Meanwhile, Gender Minister, Williametta Saydee-Tarr has hailed UN Women for its continuous support to gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls in Liberia.
Minister Tarr assured that President George Weah, as Liberia’s Feminist in Chief, was committed to enhancing women’s political participation.
She spoke of the President’s appointment of females in key Cabinet posts, and his advocacy for the thirty-percent quota on women representation.
Minister Tarr noted that the House of Representatives has agreed that political parties submit at least thirty- percent female candidates as part of their nomination listing.
She said the governing CDC, has taken the lead and committed to forty-percent nomination of female candidates, because the party deems it as good competition.
