NEW YORK, THE USA-President George Weah has told the UN General Assembly that women empowerment and promotion of gender equality remain key priorities of his government.
President Weah spoke of the legal framework that has been developed, including the ratification of regional and international instruments, to address gender inequalities.
He said:” Such efforts are being carried out as a result of socio-cultural perceptions, practices, and stereotypes that support male dominance in the sub-region.”
The Liberian Leader also disclosed that Government and UN partners are implementing the EU Spotlight Initiative, to end violence and harmful traditional practices against women and girls, and promote their sexual and reproductive health and human rights.
President Weah added that his Government is currently implementing a fifty-million United States Dollar ECOWAS-funded project, to enhance the capacity of female entrepreneurs.
He also stressed that young people can be a positive force for good when empowered, adding that this is why his government initiated a youth rehabilitation and empowerment program-the Socio-Economic Empowerment of Disadvantaged Youth Project- between 2019 and 2021.
President George Weah also mentioned the recent launch of thirteen-million US Dollar National Fund Drive, for the rehabilitation and empowerment of at-risk-youth among others.
