MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate has mandated its Committee on Autonomous Commission and Agencies to investigate reported division among Commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC) over awarding Biometric Voter Registration contract.
It followed complaint from Grand Kru County Senator, Numene Bartekwa, on Thursday, December 1, 2022.
Senator Bartekwa told the Senate that if nothing is done to resolve the situation; it may likely hamper the 2023 elections.
He noted that it is important for the Senate to look into claims that the NEC Chairperson is awarding contract against the Public Procurement and Concession Commission Law.
The Chair of the Senate Committee on Investment and Concessions maintained that the Senate needs to quickly intervene before the situation escalates.
Meanwhile, the Liberian Senate has mandated its Committee on Autonomous Commission and Agencies to report to Plenary within a week.
At the same time, Senator Bartekwa is seeking the Senate’s intervention over the reported lack of Liberian Dollar banknotes in the Southeast.
He said:” The situation is alarming and undermining the transaction of business and general wellbeing of residents in the Southeast, and the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) should appear before the Liberian Senate to explain why there are limited banknotes in the Southeast.”
Meanwhile, the Senate has ordered its Committee on Banking and Currency to investigate the situation and report within a week.
