MONROVIA, LIBERIA–Kids Educational Engagement Project (KEEP) has dedicated a reading room worth twenty-seven-five hundred United States Dollars in Garwula District, Grand Capemount County.
The modern reading room was turnover to the administration of the Madina Public High School Tuesday, April 10, 2023.
Speaking at the program, Assistant Education Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, Felecia Doe-Somah, called on Liberian students to cultivate the spirit of reading
Minister Doe-Somah said the move will help improve their learning capacity.
She admonished parents to ensure that their children make use of reading rooms being dedicated by the Kids Educational Engagement Project across the country.
The Assistant Education Minister also wants parents to discourage their children from early marriage and take advantage of educational programs.
At the same time, the Executive Director of KEEP, Brenda Moore, wants the administration of Madina Public High School to design activities to encourage the students actively utilize the library.
The Liberian educator added that the library was established to enhance reading skills and provide an enabling environment for school-going kids in the area.
She noted that based on the management and usage of the library, KEEP will ensure that additional programs including computers are provided to the school.
“The management of the first library will determine whether we will move forward – this is phase one, our organization operates under four pillars,” she said. “We created the room; the next step will be to do teachers’ training on how to manage the room and get the students into the reading room.”
Madam Moore urged the parents, teachers, and students of the community to ensure that the modern learning facility is properly maintained.
Also speaking, the County Education Officer, Elijah Freeman, expressed joy over the establishment of the reading room, adding that it is a dream come true.
“This is the first time for a local Liberian NGO to establish two libraries in the county-one at Madina Public High School and Tossor School.” “I believe this will enable our students to understand their lessons, do their assignments and study well- I am pleased and overwhelmed.”
He thanked KEEP for the reading room and called on other NGOs to emulate the good example of the Kids Educational Engagement Project as a means of providing an enabling environment for school-going kids in the county.
The reading room which contains 3,499 books was established with support from OSIWA, GT Bank, International Bank, Actival Insurance Company, and FrontPage Africa amongst others.
The Madina Public High School Reading Room marks the 31st reading room being dedicated by KEEP in eleven counties.
This school was established in 1969 and up to the present, there has been no trace of a Library – with KEEP modern reading room, the administration believes it is a new dawn for the over seven hundred school-going kids in the area.
