MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia Council of Chiefs and Elders has temporarily suspended all traditional activities in Gbarpolu County, ahead of the October 10 Elections.
The Head of the Council, Chief Zanzan Karwor, said:” The decision is aimed at creating a free movement of people when campaigning.”
Chief Karwor noted that the decision is crucial because it will help to promote human rights and sustain the country’s existing peace.
The Council’s Head also revealed that talks are ongoing with Zoes in the fifteen counties to suspend Poro and Sande activities to allow politicians and their supporters freely campaign.
Chief Zanzan Karwor is, however, urging young people to conduct themselves peacefully during political rallies and avoid hate speeches for the betterment of the country.
At the same time, Gbarpolu County Superintendent, Keya Saah, has lauded Chief Karwor for temporarily suspending traditional practices in the county and urged traditional Zoes to ensure full implementation.
Superintendent Saah also praised President George Weah for protecting women’s rights, and Government’s cautious strides to transform the country.
He said:” The Weah-led Administration is massively impacting the lives of citizens through human rights and infrastructure developments, especially the construction of the Emirates Hospital in the county.”
The Gbarpolu County Superintendent is urging citizens to give President Weah a second term to allow him to continue his development roadmap for the country.
Superintendent Saah spoke on Monday, August 14, 2023, during the temporary suspension of traditional activities in Gbarpolu County.
Meanwhile, Chief Karwor has condemned the recent violence between some supporters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Unity Party (UP), at the official start of the campaign.
Recently, some supporters of the ruling CDC and the main opposition UP were involved in a stalemate in Sinkor at the start of the official campaign, something that has since raised claims and counter-claims.
But the Head of the Council of Chiefs and Elders has condemned the act and called on the Justice Ministry to investigate the matter.
He said in doing so will help in maintaining the country’s fragile peace ahead of the October polls.
The Liberia Chief Zoe, however, wants political actors and their supporters to showcase their party’s manifestos and promote the country’s democratic systems.
