MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has expressed profound condolences to the families of Monday’s accident victims.
The incident occurred on Monday night, November 2023, at the Headquarters of the Unity Party (UP) when an untagged vehicle ran into a group of UP partisans celebrating their election victory, killing three persons and injuring dozens.
The driver of the vehicle, Lawrence Williams, has since been arrested and is undergoing police investigation.
A MICAT release issued recently quotes the Liberian Government as saying it takes particular note of a UP statement, which appears to have drawn a conclusion, by terming the incident as “domestic terrorism.”
Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia is urging the public to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims about the incident, which it says has the potential to deepen post-election violence.
At the same time, the US Embassy has called for calm amidst an ongoing investigation into Monday’s tragic incident.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the US Embassy urged Liberians to keep the peace and unite as a nation in the face of the tragedy.
The Embassy acknowledged that details of the tragedy are still emerging, although the alleged perpetrator has been apprehended and is in police custody.
The U.S. Embassy sent its deepest condolences to the victims, the wounded, their families, and everyone affected by the tragic event while wishing for speedy recovery for the injured to reunite with their families.
In the meantime, President-elect Joseph Boakai has consoled injured UP partisans involved in the hit-and-run accident at the UP Headquarters in Monrovia.
Ambassador Boakai expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident which also claimed the lives of three persons.
He made the consolation statement when he visited injured UP partisans at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
The President-elect was accompanied by his wife, Katomu Boakai, and other UP officials.
