MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has called for calm and urged the public to refrain from violence while carrying on their normal activities.

The Government said:” State security forces will continue to perform their duties with professionalism and integrity, and individuals will continue to enjoy their rights in a safe environment.”

A MICAT release issued Thursday, August 22, 2024, clarified that Thursday’s search and seizure operation by officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) in the Small Town Community, around the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Headquarters, was not intended for nor did it target the Party’s Headquarters.

It said the attempt, which received resistance from some community members, led to several LDEA personnel sustaining injuries and currently being treated at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Sinkor.

The release quotes Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah as saying after the LDEA pulled out, individuals believed to be members of the CDC blocked the free flow of traffic, setting roadblocks, lighting tires, and pelting stones at vehicles and pedestrians.

According to the Government, the Joint Security remains committed to the rule of law and protection of the country’s democratic principles, stating that no lethal weapon was used in Thursday’s violence.
